A few weeks ago, I had the incredible opportunity to immerse myself in the vibrant charm of one of America’s most beloved cities, Charleston, South Carolina. This wasn’t just any trip; it was a deeply inspiring and beautifully organized blogging retreat known as the FreshAir Retreat. For any creative entrepreneur or digital content creator, an experience like this offers an invaluable blend of professional growth and much-needed personal rejuvenation.
For those who have followed my journey with Sugar and Charm, you’ll know my enduring affection for Charleston. My first visit to this historic city dates back over 12 years ago, and since then, I’ve been fortunate enough to return at least eight times. Each visit reaffirms my love affair with its exquisite culinary scene, the undeniable Southern charm that permeates every cobblestone street, and the refreshing, gentle ocean breeze that whispers through its palmetto trees. Charleston truly is a city that never ceases to captivate and inspire.
As I predominantly operate Sugar and Charm as a solo endeavor, moments dedicated to connecting with fellow creators in person are incredibly precious. The chance to spend a weekend delving into business discussions, exchanging innovative ideas, and simply soaking up some much-needed rest and relaxation was precisely what my spirit and my business needed. I was particularly thrilled that Amanda Kamppinen, a truly talented photographer, was there to beautifully document every heartwarming moment of the weekend, capturing memories that will last a lifetime.

A Solo Sojourn: Discovering Downtown Charleston’s Enduring Allure
Prior to the official commencement of the retreat, I dedicated two blissful days to exploring downtown Charleston on my own. These solo adventures are often the most profound, allowing me to fully immerse myself in the rhythm of a place. I reveled in leisurely strolls along the historic cobblestone streets, marveling at the intricate architecture and hidden gardens that unfold around every corner. There’s nothing quite like sipping a refreshing iced coffee beneath the sprawling, moss-draped oak trees, feeling the cool shade and the gentle whisper of history. I revisited some of my absolute favorite boutiques and discovered new ones, each shop brimming with unique Southern charm and craftsmanship. Charleston’s downtown is remarkably walkable, a treasure trove of vibrant personality and captivating narratives. It truly feels like stepping directly into the pages of a beloved storybook, where every street, every building, and every glimpse of greenery contributes to an enchanting narrative.
Coastal Inspiration: The FreshAir Retreat on Isle of Palms
The main gathering of the FreshAir Retreat took place at an absolutely breathtaking house on Isle of Palms, perfectly situated directly across from the glistening ocean. The moment I stepped inside, I was greeted by an abundance of natural light and a refreshing, pervasive sea breeze. The house itself was a masterpiece of coastal elegance, featuring expansive wraparound porches that invited lingering conversations and moments of serene contemplation, all infused with an undeniable beachy charm. Our gracious hosts, Liz from The Lemon Bowl and Lauren from The Curious Plate, extended a warm welcome with expertly crafted cocktails and delectable appetizers. The atmosphere was immediately convivial and inspiring, making it feel like a luxurious summer camp designed specifically for creatives – truly in the best possible way, fostering both relaxation and robust professional exchange.
It was an absolute privilege to connect with a diverse and incredibly talented group of fellow attendees, many of whom became cherished new friends. The roster included:
- Elizabeth Van Lierde of Everyday Elizabeth, known for her vibrant lifestyle content.
- Annie Holmes from Sweet Peas and Saffron, sharing her passion for wholesome, flavorful recipes.
- Monique Volz from Ambitious Kitchen, a powerhouse in the healthy food blogging space.
- Hetal Vasavada from Milk and Cardamom, bringing unique cultural flavors to the forefront.
- Kylie Mazon-Chambers from Cooking with Cocktail Rings, celebrated for her elegant culinary creations.
Each of these women brought their unique perspectives and expertise, creating a rich tapestry of conversation and collaboration that was truly enriching.

Productive Mornings: Insightful Sessions and Deep Connections
The following morning commenced with a truly magical sunrise yoga session held on the deck, a moment that quickly became one of my absolute favorites of the entire weekend. The gentle caress of the ocean breeze, the soft, ethereal light of dawn, and the profound stillness of the early hour created an atmosphere of unparalleled tranquility. It was the perfect way to center ourselves before a day filled with engaging and informative sessions, setting a tone of mindful productivity.
Later, we delved into crucial business discussions with representatives from Grocer’s List and Mediavine, two essential partners for many digital content creators. These sessions provided invaluable insights into current industry trends and future opportunities:
- Grocer’s List showcased their innovative app, which dramatically simplifies the user experience. By allowing followers to comment “recipe” on social media posts, Grocer’s List automatically sends the full recipe directly to their inbox. This tool is a game-changer for content creators looking to enhance user engagement and streamline the recipe delivery process.
- Mediavine, my trusted ad network, provided essential updates on their platform and shared expert insights into the ever-evolving digital advertising landscape. Understanding their strategies and upcoming features is vital for optimizing monetization and staying ahead in the competitive online space. Their detailed presentations offered actionable advice that is incredibly beneficial for all creators leveraging advertising for their content.
These strategic discussions, coupled with the informal chats during breaks, truly highlighted the collaborative spirit of the retreat, offering both practical knowledge and shared wisdom from experienced professionals.

An Unforgettable Night Out: Exploring Charleston’s Culinary Scene
As evening approached, we embarked on a lively adventure, hopping onto a vibrant party bus that whisked us away from the serene Isle of Palms back into the bustling heart of downtown Charleston. Our destination for the evening was a charming and highly-regarded Italian restaurant, where we were treated to an exceptional dining experience. The food was nothing short of exquisite, each dish a testament to authentic Italian flavors and culinary artistry. Paired with a selection of fine wines, and set against a backdrop of delightful ambiance, the entire evening was simply perfect. This group outing was a wonderful opportunity to unwind, savor the city’s renowned culinary offerings, and deepen our connections with one another in a more relaxed and festive setting. It was a true celebration of community and the vibrant spirit of Charleston’s nightlife.

A Delicious Start: Breakfast Hosted by Happy Egg
The following morning began with a truly spectacular breakfast, graciously hosted by Happy Egg. As a long-time admirer of their brand, I was thrilled to experience their commitment to quality firsthand. Happy Egg sources its eggs from small family farms where hens are genuinely pasture-raised, enjoying ample space to roam freely outdoors. This ethical and sustainable approach undeniably translates into a superior product, and you can truly taste the difference in every bite. Chef Trimell, who showcased his incredible culinary talents throughout the retreat, crafted the most exquisite and innovative dishes using Happy Egg’s premium products. Each creation was bursting with flavor and creativity, making it impossible to resist going back for seconds. It was a delicious reminder of how quality ingredients elevate even the simplest meal into an extraordinary culinary experience.

Nourishing the Soul: A Burnout Reset with Sabrina Loyer
Perhaps one of the most profoundly meaningful and impactful sessions of the entire weekend was the burnout reset, expertly led by Sabrina Loyer. Sabrina is an exceptional wellness coach who specializes in supporting bloggers and creatives, understanding the unique pressures and challenges inherent in our field. She guided us through a powerful, transformative meditation and facilitated a deep dive into reconnecting with our fundamental “why.” This critical introspection helped us remember why we initially embarked on our creative journeys, why we feel compelled to share our passions, and, most importantly, how to conscientiously protect our energy while navigating the demands of running full-time online businesses. It served as a much-needed, gentle yet firm reminder to consciously slow down, tune into our inner selves, and extend ourselves the grace we so readily offer to others. In the fast-paced digital world, it’s easy to lose sight of these core principles, and Sabrina’s session was a true anchor.
Sabrina’s approach is both thoughtful and eminently actionable. She empowers creators to realign with their core purpose and develop sustainable business plans that actively support their well-being, rather than depleting it. If you ever find yourself feeling overwhelmed, creatively stagnant, or teetering on the edge of burnout, I wholeheartedly recommend following her work for invaluable guidance, grounding techniques, and a renewed sense of purpose. Her insights are a beacon for sustainable creative living.

A Taste of Local Culture: Lunch with Visit Charleston
Our retreat also included a delightful lunch with the wonderful team from Explore Charleston. Their passion for the city is as infectious as my own, and it was truly inspiring to converse with people so dedicated to showcasing the very best of this incredible destination. If you’re contemplating a trip to this enchanting city, I highly recommend following their official Instagram account. They consistently share insider tips, hidden gems, and the most up-to-date information on Charleston’s vibrant food scene, rich cultural events, and must-see attractions, making trip planning an absolute breeze.
For this memorable lunch, we ventured to Sullivan’s Fish Camp on picturesque Sullivan’s Island. The restaurant itself was simply adorable, exuding an effortless coastal charm that was utterly captivating. With its retro decor, clever branding, and the kind of laid-back, sun-drenched beach-town energy that instantly transports you into vacation mode, it was the perfect setting. I indulged in their fish tacos, which were exceptionally good – incredibly fresh, perfectly seasoned, and bursting with vibrant flavors. And here’s a delightful detail that truly elevated the experience: they had strawberry daiquiris on tap – yes, on tap! After a satisfying meal, we leisurely explored a few charming nearby gift shops, soaking in the relaxed island atmosphere. The entire afternoon embodied everything you could possibly wish for in a quintessential Charleston getaway: great food, stunning scenery, and blissful relaxation.

A Grand Finale: Dinner Infused with Soul and Southern Delights
Our final dinner of the FreshAir Retreat was an absolutely unforgettable experience, a testament to the extraordinary talent of Chef Trimell from Poetry on Plates. Chef Trimell had been graciously cooking for us throughout the entire weekend, delighting us with his culinary prowess at every meal. However, this particular evening’s sit-down, coursed dinner was truly next-level, a masterpiece of flavor and presentation. From the moment the appetizers arrived – each one thoughtfully conceived and exquisitely executed – to the perfectly seasoned shrimp and grits, a quintessential Southern comfort dish elevated to gourmet heights, every single course was a revelation. He even presented a fun, sophisticated take on classic banana pudding, transforming a familiar favorite into something truly special. Each dish was not just food; it was a narrative, filled with soul, passion, and immense creativity. You could tangibly feel the heart and meticulous intention that Chef Trimell poured into every single element of the meal, making it an deeply personal and artistic expression.
This exquisite culinary journey felt like the ideal culmination, the perfect way to bring closure to a weekend that had been so thoughtfully centered around profound connection, vibrant creativity, and the shared joy of exceptional food. It was a truly fitting finale to an inspiring retreat.

The FreshAir Retreat in Charleston was precisely the kind of experience I needed to revitalize my creative spirit and gain fresh perspective. Being surrounded by such an inspiring community of fellow creators, sharing innovative ideas, and simply allowing myself to slow down and embrace the beauty of such a picturesque location, truly filled my creative cup in every conceivable way.
