There’s a unique magic to Yosemite National Park, especially when visited in the quieter seasons of late winter and early spring. As parents of two little adventurers under five, my husband Zan and I knew we couldn’t let another season pass without experiencing its snowy splendor and dramatic landscapes. We sought a destination that offered the perfect blend of pristine snow, breathtaking nature, and the most stunning waterfalls – and Yosemite delivered an unforgettable family getaway.

Traveling with young children, like our son Romeo and baby Monroe, certainly shapes the itinerary. While Zan and I might typically embark on longer, more challenging hikes, our focus for this trip was on finding activities Romeo would genuinely enjoy and that were easily manageable with a baby in tow. This meant a slower pace, plenty of stops for exploration, and prioritizing comfort. Despite these adjustments, our Yosemite adventure was truly perfect for a nature trip with children, brimming with joy and discovery for the whole family.

Family-Friendly Accommodations: Tenaya Lodge
For our stay, we opted for Tenaya Lodge, located just outside the park entrance. This choice proved to be an excellent decision for a family with young kids. Tenaya Lodge is an expansive resort designed with families in mind, offering an impressive array of amenities. During our winter visit, the outdoor ice skating rink was a huge hit, providing endless entertainment. Inside, we found a large indoor pool, perfect for burning off energy regardless of the weather, along with several on-site restaurants catering to diverse tastes.

The lodge also features a grand fireplace in the lobby and cozy fire pits scattered around the property, creating inviting spaces for relaxation after a day of exploring. Staying mid-week made our trip even more affordable, highlighting the value Tenaya Lodge offers. I’ve enjoyed stays here during the summer too, when its two outdoor pools and poolside bar are major draws. While it’s not ultra-luxury, Tenaya Lodge provides comfortable, wonderful accommodations for families. We particularly enjoyed their cottages, which offered a bit more privacy and quiet compared to the main lodge rooms. The lodge is conveniently located about a 15-minute drive to the park entrance, followed by another 30 minutes to reach the heart of Yosemite Valley, making it a great base for exploration.
The drive into Yosemite Valley itself is an experience not to be missed. Nothing quite compares to the iconic “Tunnel View,” a breathtaking vista that unfolds as you emerge from the Wawona Tunnel. It truly feels like gazing upon a meticulously painted masterpiece, an unreal panorama that captures the grandeur of El Capitan, Bridalveil Fall, and Half Dome all at once. It’s a moment that always takes my breath away, no matter how many times I see it.

Exploring In-Park Accommodation Options for Your Yosemite Family Trip
For those who prefer to stay within Yosemite National Park, there are several wonderful options, each offering a distinct experience. Big Trees Lodge (formerly Wawona Hotel) is incredibly charming, exuding a historic elegance that transports you back in time. We actually took some of our lovely family photos there, captivated by its rustic beauty. Another fantastic choice is Yosemite Valley Lodge, centrally located right in the middle of the park. Its prime location makes it an excellent hub for exploring, and it offers convenient bike rentals, which we took advantage of during a summer visit. I recall an amazing 10-mile bike ride with Romeo one summer, weaving through the valley floor – a truly exhilarating way to experience the park with older kids.
For a truly luxurious and iconic experience, look no further than The Majestic Yosemite Hotel, previously known as The Ahwahnee. This historic landmark, now called The Majestic, is truly breathtaking. It offers unparalleled access to surrounding woods, walking trails, and picturesque bridges, making it a perfect base for families who appreciate both comfort and immersive nature experiences. While a splurge, the unique architecture and stunning natural setting make it a memorable stay for any Yosemite family trip.

The Majestic Yosemite: A Paradise for Kids and Parents Alike
During our visit, we dedicated an entire afternoon to exploring The Majestic. We started with a delightful lunch at the hotel, savoring the ambiance, before venturing out to explore the expansive grounds behind it for hours. This area is an absolute wonderland for children, offering endless opportunities to explore and play against a backdrop of unparalleled natural beauty. Romeo spent his time happily splashing and building in the creek with Zan, while baby Monroe contentedly napped in my arms, lulled by the sounds of nature.
The hotel’s surroundings provide an amazing natural setting that truly renews and refreshes your spirit. It’s a place where kids can run free, collect pinecones, skip rocks, and simply be immersed in the wilderness, while parents can soak in the serene atmosphere. It’s these moments of simple, unstructured play amidst such grandeur that make a Yosemite family trip so special, fostering a deep connection to nature for young and old alike.

Chasing Waterfalls in Yosemite: A Springtime Spectacle
As I mentioned, late winter and early spring are truly magical times to visit Yosemite, especially if you want to witness the waterfalls at their most powerful. Fed by melting snow, these colossal cascades are simply unbelievable during these months, thundering down with incredible force and volume. Our absolute favorite was Bridalveil Fall. The walk to its base is a relatively quick and easy stroll along a paved pathway, tracing the path of a gushing creek. As you approach the fall, the sheer power of the water creates a mesmerizing mist, making it feel as though you’re caught in a wild wind and rainstorm!

We were completely drenched just trying to capture a picture, but the experience was absolutely thrilling. Seeing the kids stand so close to something so majestic and powerful was a memory we’ll cherish. We also visited Lower Yosemite Falls, which offers a lovely park area with giant boulders perfect for climbing and exploring. While the waterfall itself was beautiful, it was further away from the viewing area compared to Bridalveil Fall, and some orange construction fencing did detract a bit from the natural vibe. However, it was still a magnificent sight to behold and well worth the visit, especially for the climbing opportunities it presented for Romeo.

First-Time Skiing at Badger Pass: A Perfect Family Introduction to Winter Sports
One of the highlights of our winter Yosemite family trip was Romeo’s first skiing experience! It’s a funny fact that neither Zan nor I are avid skiers, but I was determined to get Romeo on skis before he turned five. So, we signed him up for a ski lesson at Badger Pass Ski Area. This charming, small ski area is nestled right within Yosemite National Park, making it incredibly convenient. It’s unique as one of only three lift-serviced ski areas operating in a National Park, offering a truly special setting.

Badger Pass is truly wonderful for kids and beginners. The gentle slopes and dedicated instructors create a welcoming environment for those new to the sport. Romeo absolutely loved his lesson, gaining confidence on the snow. Beyond skiing, Badger Pass also features an area for tubing, which Zan and Romeo thoroughly enjoyed together. The laughter and excitement from their tubing adventures echoed across the snow, making for precious family memories. It’s an ideal spot for families looking to introduce their children to winter sports in a relaxed, scenic setting, or for beginners of all ages to enjoy the snow without the overwhelming crowds of larger resorts.

Dining and Provisions in Yosemite: What to Expect
One practical consideration for a Yosemite family trip is the dining landscape. It’s important to set expectations: Yosemite is undeniably about its unparalleled natural beauty, not its culinary scene. There aren’t a vast number of restaurants in the area, particularly within the park itself. Big Trees Lodge and The Majestic Yosemite Hotel both offer dining options for lunch and dinner. We found The Majestic to have decent food for breakfast, and Big Trees is a good choice for dinner, providing traditional American fare in a charming setting. However, for serious foodies, Yosemite is likely not your primary destination.
To supplement your meals, the Village Store in Yosemite Valley is an invaluable resource. It’s well-stocked with groceries, freshly made sandwiches, BBQ items, and a variety of souvenirs. We highly recommend stocking up on snacks, drinks, and ingredients for packed lunches. The park is dotted with numerous scenic picnic areas, offering the perfect opportunity to enjoy a meal amidst stunning backdrops. Packing a cooler with your own provisions is not only economical but also allows for greater flexibility and ensures you have exactly what your family needs throughout the day, especially with picky eaters or specific dietary requirements. Embrace the picnic culture and make the most of Yosemite’s incredible outdoor dining rooms.

Creating Lasting Memories in Yosemite
Our Yosemite family trip was a truly wonderful experience, creating cherished memories that we can’t wait to relive every year. From the thunderous roar of the waterfalls and the thrill of Romeo’s first ski lesson at Badger Pass, to the serene moments exploring creeks and hiking among giant sequoias, Yosemite offers something truly special for every age. It’s a place where the grandeur of nature inspires awe, fosters family bonding, and reminds us of the importance of disconnecting from the everyday to reconnect with each other and the wild world around us. We encourage you to plan your own adventure to this incredible National Park, whether it’s for a winter wonderland experience or a spring spectacle of cascading falls.
