Our quest for a cozy cabin to escape to led us on an exciting search for a property that offered charm without demanding extensive structural overhauls. We envisioned a place where we could implement straightforward upgrades, adding our personal touch to create a comfortable retreat. We were fortunate to discover the perfect Tennessee home—a delightful cabin nestled on several acres, complete with a charming tin roof, yet conveniently close enough to the city for easy access. The house itself was in remarkable condition, boasting new windows and a sturdy roof, but it yearned for a touch of contemporary design flair to truly reflect our aesthetic.

While the kitchen had seen a recent refresh by the previous owners, its style diverged significantly from our vision. The space was dominated by rather stark yellow walls and uninspired, cheaper black appliances, creating an undeniably dark and somewhat oppressive atmosphere. Our primary goal was to inject brightness and a sense of openness into this crucial heart of the home. Unlike the extensive, complete gut job we undertook for our cottage in Los Angeles, this particular small kitchen remodel necessitated a very conscious and strict budget. This constraint, however, proved to be a creative catalyst, forcing us to make smart, impactful decisions.

With a clear understanding of our financial boundaries, we meticulously crafted our budget and compiled a detailed list of existing elements we could strategically incorporate into our new design. This meticulous planning allowed us to work with what we had, maximizing our resources. Once our simple yet effective plan was finalized, the exciting journey of our small kitchen remodel officially began!

Smart Choices for Kitchen Cabinets: Working with What You Have

One of our key strategies for maintaining a budget-friendly kitchen renovation was making the most of the existing gray cabinets. These cabinets had been installed by the previous owner just a year prior, meaning they were practically new and in excellent condition. Removing them would have been both incredibly wasteful and prohibitively expensive. We had a strong conviction that with the right updates—namely, a new countertop and stylish pulls—these cabinets would seamlessly integrate into our desired modern rustic kitchen aesthetic.

However, one peculiar detail stood out: all the toe kicks and filler strips around the kitchen were a contrasting black. This stark difference visually chopped up the space and detracted from the clean lines we sought. To our immense delight and fortune, we discovered a stash of leftover gray toe kick material in the basement! This stroke of luck allowed us to easily rip off the vinyl black toe kick and replace it with the matching gray, instantly creating a more cohesive and sophisticated look without any additional cost. This small change had a surprisingly large impact on the overall feel of the cabinetry.

Beyond the toe kicks, our work on the cabinetry involved strategic modifications. We largely preserved the lower cabinets, making just one crucial adjustment: removing a section to accommodate a new mini-fridge, a fantastic addition for entertaining. Following the toe kick update, we completely removed all the upper cabinets. This bold decision was pivotal in transforming the kitchen’s feel. Above the original upper cabinets, there was a bulky drop soffit. To our absolute delight, upon careful inspection, we discovered it was empty! Without hesitation, we proceeded to dismantle the soffit as well. The immediate result was breathtaking; the entire space instantly felt more expansive, brighter, and incredibly open, truly setting the stage for our dream kitchen design.

Embracing Natural Light: The Power of Large Windows and Smart Drywall Choices

When undertaking any small kitchen remodel, especially in a cozy cabin, the impact of windows cannot be overstated. We firmly believe that prioritizing a larger portion of your budget for a magnificent, oversized window is one of the most impactful decisions you can make. The philosophy is simple: go as big as you possibly can! Adding a huge window effortlessly blurs the lines between indoor and outdoor living, inviting the serene beauty of the Tennessee landscape directly into your home. Beyond the aesthetic appeal, a generous window drenches the space in beautiful, natural light, making the kitchen feel significantly larger and more inviting. Furthermore, it occupies a substantial wall area, cleverly reducing the need for costly drywall, intricate tiling, or additional light fixtures, thus contributing to our budget kitchen renovation goals. Personally, I’ve always dreamt of living in a glass house; there’s an undeniable magic and comfort in how giant windows transform a living space.

The original window situated above the sink area was disappointingly small, doing little to enhance the space. Rectifying this was a top priority. We sourced the largest possible window that would fit within that space from Home Depot, opting for elegant Anderson black-framed windows, which were an investment at approximately $800 each. While a significant expense, this decision was central to our kitchen transformation, providing an incredible return in terms of light and ambiance.

Given the necessity of enlarging the existing opening and installing a structural beam above it for support, we wisely enlisted professional help for the window installation. We also hired these experts to seamlessly complete the drywall work in the kitchen, expertly finishing the areas where we had removed old tile and the cumbersome soffit. This ensured a pristine, smooth canvas for our new design. To further save money and maximize our budget, my husband took on the task of doing all the trim work around both new windows himself. This DIY contribution not only saved costs but also added a personal touch to the craftsmanship.

Elegant Countertops: The Foundation of a Modern Kitchen

The original countertops, a black, spotted granite, were unequivocally non-negotiable for our remodel. They contributed to the dark and dated feel of the kitchen, and their removal was among our first and firmest decisions. For a fresh, contemporary update, we selected an incredibly affordable yet stunning white quartz. To infuse an element of modern sophistication and clean lines, we incorporated stylish waterfall edges on either side of the main counter run. This design choice not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also creates a seamless, elegant flow.

The entire countertop project, including professional installation, came in at a reasonable $3500. We considered this an excellent value, especially when comparing it to the significantly higher costs we encountered for similar installations during our cottage remodel in Los Angeles. White quartz offers durability, easy maintenance, and a timeless appeal, making it an ideal choice for a busy kitchen and perfectly aligning with our goal of a bright, modern, and inviting space.

Drywall vs. Tile: A Seamless and Cost-Effective Backsplash Solution

During our research for kitchen design ideas, we were particularly captivated by a beautiful kitchen that featured only drywall on its walls, foregoing a traditional tiled backsplash. This concept immediately resonated with our budget-friendly kitchen renovation strategy, as it promised significant savings in both money and installation time. We ultimately decided to adopt this sleek and minimalist approach for our own kitchen.

Initially, we did consider adding elegant wood panels for a touch of rustic charm. However, upon further deliberation, we realized that wood paneling would undoubtedly incur additional costs and a more complex installation process. Sticking with simple drywall emerged as the most practical and efficient choice, and we couldn’t be happier with the outcome. The clean, uninterrupted lines of the painted drywall contribute immensely to the bright and open feel of our small kitchen remodel.

If you choose to implement a drywall backsplash in your kitchen, it is absolutely crucial to select a high-quality paint with a durable finish, such as an eggshell, satin, or semi-gloss. These finishes are designed to withstand moisture and are incredibly easy to wipe clean with just a damp cloth, ensuring longevity and practicality in a high-traffic area like the kitchen.

Appliance Upgrades: The Heart of a Modern Kitchen

In any kitchen design, appliances are unequivocally EVERYTHING! They are the functional workhorses and the defining aesthetic elements that can instantly elevate a space. Investing in beautiful, sleek, and high-performing appliances is arguably the most impactful way to achieve an instant upgrade and significantly boost the value of your kitchen. Appliances serve as the staple, the focal point, and the essential backbone of the entire culinary area, seamlessly blending functionality with sophisticated design.

My affinity for Cafe Appliances began over a decade ago with my very first kitchen remodel, where I purchased a Cafe range and instantly fell in love with its performance and style. Since then, Cafe Appliances has consistently pushed the boundaries, crafting some of the most sleek, aesthetically pleasing, and technologically smart appliances available on the market today. What truly sets them apart is the remarkable ability to customize your appliances, allowing you to choose not only the finish but also the hardware (handles and knobs), ensuring they perfectly complement your unique kitchen design.

For our Tennessee cabin kitchen, we opted for the classic elegance of stainless steel to harmonize with the existing gray cabinets and the overall bright, modern rustic kitchen look. To add a touch of warmth and sophistication, we modernized the aesthetic with brushed bronze hardware, creating a beautiful contrast that truly makes the appliances pop. Beyond their stunning appearance, we adore the convenience and efficiency offered by features like the convection oven, which enhances our cooking experience immensely.

Café™ 30″ Smart Slide-In, Front-Control, Radiant and Convection Range

This range is, without a doubt, one of the best options available on the market in its price category, offering incredible value at around $2300. Its rapid boiling feature is astonishingly fast, bringing water to a rolling boil in literally 10 seconds—a speed that initially took some getting used to! Beyond its impressive speed, it ensures remarkably even baking, boasts a suite of smart features for modern convenience, and presents a consistently sleek and professional appearance that elevates the entire kitchen.

Café™ ENERGY STAR® 23.1 Cu. Ft. Smart Counter-Depth French-Door Refrigerator

For our compact kitchen space, a counter-depth refrigerator was an absolute necessity. Its design ensures that it aligns seamlessly with standard cabinets, preventing it from protruding too far and disrupting the clean lines of the kitchen. This thoughtful choice maximizes floor space and maintains an uncluttered aesthetic, crucial for a small kitchen remodel.

We also made a conscious decision to forego an ice maker in the refrigerator door. This choice cleverly provided even more usable space within the fridge compartment itself. Instead, the ice maker is conveniently located within the freezer drawer, a smart design that offers both functionality and optimized storage.

Café™ Beverage Center

As avid entertainers, and with a desire to preserve precious space in our main refrigerator for food items rather than drinks, we knew a dedicated beverage center would be an invaluable addition. This appliance has proven to be an absolute workhorse, perfect for neatly storing everything from natural sodas for the kids to sparkling waters, craft beers, refreshing kombucha, and our collection of wines. We find ourselves utilizing the beverage center almost as frequently as our primary refrigerator. Its smart features add modern convenience, and its sleek design perfectly complements the overall aesthetic of our kitchen.

Our choice for a dishwasher was this particular Café™ model, and it consistently delivers impeccable results, leaving our dishes sparkling clean every time. We especially appreciate its thoughtful features, including an adjustable rack that accommodates various dish sizes and powerful jets that tackle even the toughest grime. It’s a reliable and efficient component of our kitchen. Truly, when it comes to appliance upgrades, you can’t go wrong with Cafe Appliances, as they continually produce some of the best-designed and most effective kitchen solutions on the market.

Rethinking the Range Hood: An Aesthetic and Practical Decision

Let’s address a common kitchen staple that often goes unquestioned: the range hood. While it’s true that range hoods are designed to mitigate smoke, odors, and grease particles during cooking, our experience, both in our Los Angeles cottage and now in our Tennessee cabin, suggests they are not always an absolute necessity. For lighter cooking, simply opening a window or ensuring good ventilation in the room can often suffice. And when it comes to grease, a quick wipe down of the adjacent wall after cooking is usually all that’s needed.

We deliberately chose not to install a range hood in our Los Angeles kitchen, and we replicated that decision here. In our very first kitchen remodel, we did include one, but realistically, we found ourselves using it perhaps a maximum of 10 times a year, if that. This realization led us to opt out of installing one in this budget kitchen renovation, and we have been perfectly content with this choice. Eliminating the bulky hood not only saved us money but also contributed to the open and airy feel of the kitchen, aligning perfectly with our minimalist aesthetic.

Instead of a traditional range hood, we opted for a charming and functional pot rack installed directly over the range. This solution provides accessible storage for our beautiful copper pots and pans, transforming them into a decorative feature that adds a touch of warmth and rustic elegance to the space. We found the perfect one on Etsy, and it works absolutely beautifully!

The Charm and Practicality of Open Shelving

The decision to remove all upper cabinets was one of the most transformative choices in our small kitchen remodel. These cabinets previously made the kitchen feel enclosed, cramped, and noticeably dark. The moment they came down, the entire space underwent an instantaneous and dramatic change, feeling significantly brighter and more expansive. To retain some functional storage and display space without sacrificing the open feel, we incorporated elegant open shelving.

These shelves are perfect for holding our everyday white bowls and plates, keeping essential items easily accessible and adding a curated, yet lived-in feel to the kitchen. The crisp white of the shelves themselves further amplifies the brightness of the room, contributing to our desired modern rustic kitchen aesthetic. We carefully selected our shelves and brackets to complement the overall design:

  • White Shelves – We opted for 10-inch deep, 3-foot long shelves, providing ample storage without overwhelming the space.
  • Brass Shelf Brackets – These brackets, chosen for their warm metallic tone, are not only incredibly stylish but also very affordable, perfectly complementing the brushed bronze hardware on our Cafe Appliances.

Curating Kitchen Accessories: The Finishing Touches

No kitchen transformation is truly complete without the thoughtful selection of accessories. We dedicated a specific portion of our budget to acquiring new pots, pans, and other decorative yet functional items that would tie our new kitchen design together beautifully. The majority of these delightful pieces are sourced from Williams Sonoma, a testament to their quality and timeless appeal. Here are a few of our favorite items that add both charm and utility to our updated kitchen:

  • Le Creuset Cream Dutch Oven: A classic piece that combines functionality with enduring elegance, perfect for slow-cooked meals.
  • Walnut Wooden Spoons: Essential tools that bring natural warmth and craftsmanship to the counter.
  • Copper Pans from Williams Sonoma in the 10″ and 12″: These stunning copper pans are not only superb for cooking but also serve as beautiful decorative elements, especially when hung on our pot rack.
  • Utensil Holder: A stylish way to keep frequently used cooking tools organized and within reach.
  • Copper Vitamix: Blending high performance with a striking aesthetic, this blender is a functional showpiece.
  • Wooden Cutting Boards: Practical for food prep and beautiful enough to display.
  • Brass Bordered Stone Jar: A unique accent piece that adds texture and visual interest.
  • Matte White Utensil Holder: A sleek alternative or complement to the other utensil holder, blending seamlessly with our white shelves.
  • Breville Espresso Maker: The cornerstone of our dedicated coffee station.

A designated coffee area in the kitchen is an absolute must-have for us, transforming the morning routine into a delightful ritual. This cozy spot, tucked away just off to the side, proved to be the perfect location for our beloved espresso machine. To complete this charming station, we added a small shelf directly above to neatly store our collection of coffee mugs. This little nook is utilized every single day, becoming a cherished part of our kitchen’s functionality and aesthetic.

Strategic Savings: Areas We Trimmed Costs in Our Small Kitchen Remodel

Adhering to a strict budget for our Tennessee cabin kitchen renovation required mindful decisions and creative solutions. Here are the key areas where we successfully saved money without compromising our vision for a bright, modern, and cozy space:

  • Keeping the Cabinets as They Were: Rather than undertaking the costly and time-consuming process of replacing perfectly good cabinetry, we chose to work with the existing gray cabinets. This saved thousands of dollars and significantly reduced labor. For those with less-than-perfect existing cabinets, options like refinishing or painting can also provide a cost-effective alternative to full replacement.
  • Preserving the Existing Tile Floor: The original tile floor, while not our ideal choice, was in good condition and functional. We made the strategic decision to keep it and design around it, avoiding the substantial expense and disruption of ripping it out and installing new flooring. This proved to be a major budget saver.
  • Opting for Drywall Over Tiled Backsplash: As discussed, foregoing a traditional tiled backsplash in favor of a clean drywall finish was a significant cost-saving measure. It eliminated material costs for tiles and grout, as well as the labor involved in installation. This minimalist approach also contributes to the kitchen’s bright and uncluttered aesthetic.
  • Retaining Existing Light Fixtures: While we considered new lighting, the existing fixtures were functional and unobtrusive. By keeping them, we avoided another layer of expense, allowing us to allocate funds to areas that would have a more dramatic impact on the kitchen’s overall transformation.

Investments for Impact: Areas Where We Allocated Our Budget

While saving money was paramount, we also recognized the importance of investing in key elements that would deliver the most significant impact and elevate the kitchen’s functionality and aesthetic. These were the areas where we consciously chose to allocate a larger portion of our budget:

  • New Countertops: Replacing the dark, spotted granite with modern white quartz and stylish waterfall edges was a crucial investment. Countertops are a major visual element and functional surface, and this upgrade dramatically brightened and modernized the space.
  • Large Windows: The decision to install significantly larger windows was an investment in natural light, spatial perception, and connecting the indoor space with the beautiful outdoors. This single change had an immense effect on the kitchen’s atmosphere.
  • Cafe Appliances: High-quality, aesthetically pleasing appliances were a non-negotiable for us. They add tremendous value, define the kitchen’s style, and enhance the cooking and entertaining experience. Their customizable features also allowed for a personalized touch.
  • Open Shelving: While seemingly simple, the cost of quality shelves and robust brass brackets, combined with the labor for installation (including drywall work after cabinet removal), represented a deliberate investment in creating an open, airy, and visually appealing storage solution.
  • Kitchen Accessories: Curating a collection of new pots, pans, and decorative kitchen items from Williams Sonoma was a finishing investment that pulled the entire design together, adding warmth, character, and immediate functionality.

Overall, our small kitchen remodel turned out incredibly well. By strategically keeping the existing floors, maintaining the original layout, working with the gray cabinets, and opting against a tiled backsplash, we managed to save a substantial amount of money. The final result is a kitchen that feels much brighter, distinctly modern, yet wonderfully cozy—a perfect reflection of our Tennessee cabin’s charm. The total cost for this comprehensive kitchen remodel, including all new appliances, windows, countertops, and every meticulous detail, came in at approximately $18,000. This project proves that with thoughtful planning and strategic choices, a significant kitchen transformation can be achieved even on a strict budget.
